Are You Wearing Plastic?

Most people don’t realize that polyester is plastic. It’s everywhere around us: in clothing, socks, underwear, bras, jackets, coats, hats. Polyester and other synthetic fibers are melted plastic that are woven into strands and function like cotton. However, it sheds microplastics as it’s being worn and washed. And these microplastics somehow find their way inside our bodies. Worse, most clothing are treated with forever chemicals and toxic dyes, which leach onto our skin and get absorbed into our bodies, potentially wreaking havoc on our hormone systems.

Give your immune system a break with clothing that’s as close to nature as possible—because what touches your skin every day matters more than most people realize.

As scientific understanding of microplastics evolves, so too does the urgency of rethinking what we wear. For years, the conversation centered on environmental impact—plastic islands in our oceans formed in part by fibers shed from synthetic clothing during washing. Today, that discussion has taken a far more personal turn. Emerging research is identifying microplastics within the human body—in the bloodstream, brain tissue, and reproductive systems—raising serious questions about long-term exposure and cumulative effects, particularly for vulnerable populations such as infants and pregnant women.

While research is ongoing, one conclusion is increasingly difficult to ignore: reducing unnecessary exposure to synthetic materials—especially those in constant contact with the skin—is a prudent and proactive choice.

At Rawganique, this philosophy has guided our work for nearly three decades. Since 1997, we have been committed to producing clothing rooted in natural materials, traditional craftsmanship, and uncompromising transparency. Today, that commitment has sharpened into a clear objective: to eliminate plastic wherever possible from the garments we create.

We believe transparency is essential. That’s why we disclose biodegradability percentages directly on our product pages. For the majority of our garments, we go further—clearly stating when every component is derived from 100% natural origin. These pieces are not only plastic-free, but fully biodegradable and compostable, aligning both with ecological responsibility and personal well-being.

Achieving this level of purity requires going beyond conventional supply chains. Many truly natural garment components simply do not exist at scale in today’s market. In response, we have spent years developing our own in-house trims using organic cotton, linen, and hemp. Every detail is considered:

  • Buttons are carved from tagua nut and coconut shells—durable, renewable, and completely plastic-free.plastic-free buttons
  • We use pure organic cotton thread whenever structurally feasible, reserving cotton-covered poly thread only where additional strength or elasticity is absolutely necessary.
  • Our elastic is composed of organic cotton and natural rubber—avoiding fully synthetic alternatives.
  • Even our labels are made from organic cotton and European oak, eliminating hidden polyester content common in the industry.

This level of material integrity is rare—not because it is impossible, but because it requires deliberate design, slower production, and a willingness to challenge industry norms.

The strong response to our Rawganique Purity Collection confirms that more people are seeking this standard. From socks and underwear to T-shirts and shorts, these garments are made without synthetic fibers or chemical treatments—representing what clothing can be when purity is the priority, not the compromise.

All Rawganique products are produced in small batches, sweatshop-free, in the USA and Europe. This approach allows us to maintain strict quality control while supporting ethical manufacturing practices—another essential aspect of true sustainability.

Today, our offerings extend well beyond basics. We now provide plastic-free solutions for workwear, activewear, and gym wear, as well as daily essentials including organic bras, bed sheets, towels, blackout curtains, and car seat covers. Each product is designed with the same principle: use only materials sourced from nature, and eliminate unnecessary synthetics at every stage.

Looking ahead, our work continues to be informed by the past. We actively research and revive traditional methods of growing, processing, and constructing textiles—techniques developed long before the introduction of petrochemicals and plastics. These time-tested approaches offer not only environmental advantages, but also a blueprint for healthier, more resilient materials.

This is not a trend for us—it is the essence of what Rawganique is: a long-term commitment to redefining what clothing should be.

We value your perspective as part of this ongoing journey. If there are products you need, improvements you’d like to see, or ideas you’d like to share, we encourage you to reach out at info@rawganique.com.

Naturally yours,
The Rawganique Team
