  They did not exist until we started making them in 2000. They are the world's first and only organically grown European hemp terry pile towels. As such, they are rare, unique, and very special. There have been Chinese-made hemp towels, but they may have issues with chemical processing and with human rights in terms of sweatshop conditions during production. Our heritage-quality organic hemp towels are chemical-free, sweatshop-free, and as pure and sustainable as they come.
  
  
• What are your hemp towels like?
  
  Very similar in look and feel to traditional Irish and Scandinavian linen pile friction towels but with a lighter color. Both are more substantial in feel than organic cotton towels, which are plusher but not as strong.   Please note: dimensions stated above refer to towel sizes before pre-shrinking by washing and tumbling, which are responsibly and ecologically done at our finishing facility in Germany. Actual dimensions may be slightly smaller due to natural shrinkage (up to about 8%). Slight deepening of color of the linen towels over time is normal and expected.

  Care instructions: Machine wash in warm water (mild biodegradable detergent) with like colors. Avoid bleach, fabric softeners (which clog natural fibers and shorten their life span), and optical brighteners (most oxygen or hydrogen-peroxide brighteners available at health food stores are OK to use). Hang or lay flat to dry. We do not recommend machine drying your new organic hemp towels as dry heat is hard on natural fibers such as hemp and flax linen and may compromise their long-term durability.

  However, for convenience, many customers have been machine drying their hemp and linen towels —they've reported that some linting occurred but otherwise their towels have come out fine, so we leave it up to you to decide. Hemp and flax are such strong fibers that machine drying on delicate or air dry cycle would probably be fine in the long run. And unlike conventional towels, our Organic Hemp Towels and Linen Towels get softer with each wash and cozier with each use.

  After 3-4 washes, the natural protective oils are removed and the hemp and linen piles begin to soften. Then you'll begin to notice their true plushness, which will surely make them your favorite organic towels.

  Important Notice: Since we use natural looming techniques, some loops in the terry may get skipped or there may be extra threads in places. This is entirely normal and expected. If you come across loose threads, simply snip them off with sharp scissors close to the base. The toweling won't run. We thank you for your understanding; we try our best to maintain the integrity of heritage weaving, knitting, and looping practices, which may not yield as uniform a result as conventional, chemically-treated towels.
  
  Please note: Hemp and flax linen fibers vary in color from batch to batch due to weather conditions during plant growth and harvest. Color variations in unbleached natural fibers are to be expected and are part of the charm of using truly natural products that have not been chemically treated for uniformity. We try to color-match products as much as possible at the time of shipping but cannot guarantee that colors will match in a set. If you are particular about colors matching, please go with Organic Cotton Towels in Natural color instead as the color variation there, if any, is minimal.

Hemp and flax linen terry towels have a long and revered history in the sauna culture of northern Europe, and rightly so. Our hemp and linen pile towels give the same massaging action during a rubdown as the Swedish sauna/massage towels. They get softer with each wash and will outlast cotton towels by a good margin.

Our European Hemp Terry Towels are extra hefty and will invigorate tired skin back to life after a long day at work or in the sauna, in contrast to our 100% organic cotton towels, which are softer, plusher, more pampering, and not as vigorous as our hemp towels in their massaging action.

Sustainable and luxurious, our Euro-Luxury Hemp Towels feature the highest possible percentage of hemp content in a terry towel. Hemp fiber can absorb 150% of its weight in water (as opposed to cotton, which can absorb about 100% their weight) so our organic hemp towels are as absorbent as they come; they are very hefty and substantial in feel, thanks to the hemp fiber's naturally insulating hollow core and thicker yarn (the hemp towels weigh in at a hefty 720 grams per square meter -- almost 100 grams per square meter "thicker" than our original hemp towels). They will get even softer with use.

We offer our European Hemp Terry Bath Towels in the Ecu Natural Color, which is a light cream color. Absolutely no bleaches or dyes ever came near our organic hemp terry towels.

Our European hemp pile bath towels are similar to the extremely rare, expensive (at least twice the price of ours at last check), and much sought-after Irish Linen Loop Friction Health Towels that are revered in Ireland, England, and beyond with the added benefit that our linen pile towels are certified organic and much softer than the traditional Irish linen towels. We have transferred the age-old qualities and craftsmanship of Irish linen to our all-organic, highly absorbent European hemp towels, making them ideal for the purist who will not settle for anything less than absolute purity and environmental sustainability in everyday living.

A bit of history: Because of its strength, softness, warmth, and long-lasting qualities, hemp continued to be the second most-used natural fiber until 1930s...After the 1937 Marijuana Tax law (which effectively banned/outlawed hemp cultivation in the US), new DuPont "plastic fibers," under license since 1936 from the German company I.G. Farben (patent surrenders were part of Germany's WWI reparation payments to America), replaced natural hempen fibers. (Some 30% of I.G. Farben, under Hitler, was owned and financed by America's DuPont.)

DuPont also introduced Nylon (invented in 1935) to the market after they 'd patented it in 1938...Finally, it must be noted that approximately 50% of all chemicals used in American agriculture today are used in conventional cotton growing, whereas hemp needs no chemicals and has few weed or insect enemies. -- from The Emperor Wears No Clothes by Jack Herer.
