What's so bad about PVC or foam yoga mats?

According to the Center for Health, Environment, and Justice (which recommended removing PVC products such as vinyl shower curtains from store shelves in 2009), PVC products outgas 108 different chemicals within the first 28 days of use and continue to do so for a very long time: that "new" smell is the telltale sign of all those chemicals going into your lungs and skin. It's bad enough having to deal with chlorine and possible lead and mercury contamination in municipal water; the last thing you'd want to add to your list of daily exposure to chemicals is PVC-anything. PVC has been associated with many serious human ailments. Even conservative organizations have started to caution people against vinyl / PVC products.

There are two particularly harmful and unavoidable byproducts of PVC: Dioxin and PCBs. Dioxin is created during all phases of PVC production, as well as in its disposal by incineration or accidental fire. There is no "threshold" dose for dioxin. For dioxin, the lowest dose that causes hormonal action has not been found yet. It currently stands at about 1 part per trillion, but researchers have been unable to find the threshold using the most up-to-date advanced systems. It is thought to be the most toxic human-made chemical.

We quote from the study: "Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic [products purchased at some of the big chains] all contain avoidable toxic chemicals including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), phthalates, organotins and metals. Some of these chemicals are volatile, so they are released into the air inside our homes... Some of these chemicals cause developmental damage as well as damage to the liver and central nervous, respiratory, and reproductive systems."

Natural rubber is tapped, like maple syrup, from a rubber tree, a sustainable, renewable resource. We use natural rubber because it grips better and has more cushion than any of the synthetic rubbers on the market (PVC, PER, TPE, EVA). It is also better for the earth as it is made sustainably. In addition to natural rubber, our mats contain both natural and man-made components. The precise components of our mats are proprietary (the last thing we want is someone knocking off our mats overseas); Jade mats contain no PVC's, heavy metals or ozone depleting substances. All components are approved by FDA for use in rubber in continuous contact with food. Is there latex in Jade mats? Although Jade mats are 99% latex free, as they from a rubber tree, there may be trace amounts of latex proteins in the mats so we recommend persons with latex allergies avoid contact with our mats. Finally, through its partnership with Trees for the Future, Jade Yoga plants a tree for every mat sold. When will that rubber smell go away? The natural rubber smell will dissipate over time. The best way to accelerate this process is to air the mat out in a well ventilated area - maybe even in front of a fan - but not in direct sunlight. Because natural rubber has natural variations in smell, and everyone has different sensitivities, the amount of time it takes for the smell to dissipate varies. For most people a week or two is enough, but for some people it may take a couple months (but just like with a car tire or bike tire or anything made of rubber, even then there will be some residual smell.) How do I wash my mat? As Jade mats act like sponges - and hold water, we recommend simple wiping the surface of your mat on a regular basis with plain water. If your mat needs an occasional deep cleaning, that is fine, but you should be aware that as Jade mats act like sponges, holding soap and water, you must be prepared to thoroughly rinse and dry your mat. You can wash your mats by soaking in a bathtub, hosing it off or in a front loading washing machine (no agitator) on gentle. We recommend a mild soap. Do not use oils, solvents or harsh abrasives. The mat should then be hung or laid flat to dry. DO NOT DRY IN OR ALLOW PROLONGED EXPOSURE TO DIRECT SUNLIGHT. What do you mean by "Buy a mat. We plant a tree?" • How is your hemp yoga mat different?
  
  It is hand-woven in Europe from organically grown European hemp. It's a thick 38 oz/sq yard soft & rustic woven mat that's as pure and natural as they come. • Is there a rubber backing on your hemp yoga mat?
  
  No. We purposely did not use any rubber per customer request and concern. We want our hemp yoga mat to be as pure, sustainable, and natural as possible. See ways to add a grip surface to your hemp yoga mat in the next heading.
  
  
• What surface is your hemp yoga mat good for?
  
  
• It's ideal for carpeted or other gripping or frictive floors of many homes and yoga studios. In our yoga studio, there is a rather rough coir carpet (which provides a lot of traction) which does an amazing job of keeping the hemp yoga mat in place even through the difficult stretch poses. See photo at top.
  
  
• To use with a smooth surface, you'd need some kind of a non-slip backing. Untreated natural latex backing for carpets or rugs would do just fine.
  
  
• Many customers also use the hemp yoga mat ON TOP of their regular rubber yoga mats (or those provided by yoga studios). This way, during practice, which always involves deep inhalations, they are shielded from the chemical outgassing of conventional yoga mats in addition to having a softer surface of the hemp yoga mat to practice on.
  
  
• For those using this hemp mat as a meditation mat or yoga prop, any surface is perfectly fine, of course.
  
  
• Compatibility: Of the grip type, non-skid yoga mats available out there, we've found 100% natural rubber yoga mats to be the safest. All foam yoga mats contain PVC, which is really toxic to human and planetary health, especially during deep breathing. Although comparatively healthier than foam mats, natural rubber yoga mats still smell (outgas) pretty badly, plus the surface feels unnatural against the the skin. That's why our customers use our hemp yoga mats on top of open-cell natural rubber yoga mat if they need a non-skid practice surface. This accomplishes 2 things: 1) it protects against the smell (and hence any chemical outgassing) of the natural rubber mat 2) it provides a soft and natural contact with the skin. Hemp fabric wicks away moisture at a fast rate and is naturally anti-bacterial, so it's an ideal material for mindful yoga practice.

• How do I care for my hemp yoga mat?
  
  

  The hemp yoga mats - meditation mats are machine washable (front loader recommended) in warm or cold water with like colors using a mild, biodegradable detergent. They are best hung or laid flat to dry. If you wish, you may machine dry them at low heat/air dry setting (remove promptly) but we generally do not recommend it as excessive linting may occur.
