Random Ruminations
from Anonymous

Our lives become routines. Even the smallest actions we take have environmental implications, both to our personal health and the world. And 1,000 seemingly insignificant actions add up to a larger risk factor, as people take risks they don't even know they're taking. We're now going to take a tour of routine actions seen through environmental magnification. We need a tour guide - we'll call him Jim. He's just about to start his day, and El asked if we could tag along. A DAY IN THE LIFE Monday Morning - 6:15 AM Precisely at this moment, a radio/alarm clock with a computer chip has been waiting all weekend to jolt Jim into consciousness. The music comes pouring into his ears as he wakes up for the work week, an advertisement comes on selling cars. The alarm clock uses 8 watts of electricity an hour, so it creates 7 ounces of air pollution per year to operate. (1) Jim's eyes begin to unblur and focus as he takes his first conscious breath. He lies there, too comfortable and dizzy to want to get up. Being a fairly young person, he parties on most weekends and he still feels a bit hung-over. Jim's dizziness may be sleepiness, or too many drinks last Saturday. But then again he painted the wall of his bedroom Saturday morning, and the volatile organic compounds in the paint, known to cause dizziness in some people, are ''outgas sing.''
